Frequently Asked Questions
Most people think of massage as something you get to relax. What I do goes deeper than that. Therapeutic bodywork addresses the actual source of your pain, tension or stress — not just the surface symptoms. I combine therapeutic massage, craniosacral therapy and myofascial release into a single session tailored to what your body needs that day. The work is hands-on, attentive and deeply personalized. No two sessions are the same.
People come to me with chronic back pain, neck and shoulder tension, stress that won’t let go, tension headaches and migraines, jaw pain and TMJ, post-injury stiffness, and emotional load that’s settled into the body, as well as other complaints and for long term well being and health. Many of my clients are people who’ve tried other things and haven’t found lasting relief. Some are dealing with pain they’ve learned to live with — until they realize they don’t have to.
We start with a conversation about what’s going on in your body — what hurts, what’s been building, what you’ve tried. Then you lie on the treatment table and I begin working, checking in with you throughout. I draw on whichever combination of techniques your body responds to that day. Most people feel a significant shift within the session itself. Afterwards it’s common to feel lighter, more spacious in the body, and deeply rested
For craniosacral therapy, yes — you remain fully clothed. For therapeutic massage and myofascial release, I work directly on the skin with appropriate draping throughout. I’ll always explain what I’m doing and check in with you so you feel comfortable and informed at every stage. Even though therapeutic massage and myofascial release are ideally done directly on the skin, it can be done over clothes for those who feel more comfortable being treated with clothes on. I always say that the being comfortable and feeling safe are the most important thing.
Craniosacral therapy is a very gentle, hands-on approach that works with the rhythm of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It uses extremely light touch — less pressure than the weight of a coin — and yet what happens inside can be profound. In my experience it’s particularly effective for chronic headaches and migraines, jaw tension and TMJ, nervous system dysregulation, sleep difficulties, and stress that feels like it’s wired into your system. It looks subtle from the outside, but clients consistently report deep shifts after a session. Craniosacral Therapy is mostly a neutral touch, which is very different than most modalities, because the intention is not to “fix” or “do” anything, rather it’s like a friend who just sits there and listens to you while you vent all that needs to come up and out. It’s amazing what happens when a person is just listened to rather than manipulated.
Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, organ and structure in your body. When it tightens — from injury, repetitive stress, poor posture or held tension — it creates restrictions that don’t respond to ordinary massage. Myofascial release works directly with that tissue, using sustained pressure to allow it to soften and unwind. It’s especially effective for chronic pain, limited mobility, frozen shoulder, and areas that feel perpetually stuck no matter how much you stretch or rest.
In my 20+ years of practice, chronic back pain is one of the most common things I work with. The key is understanding that back pain rarely lives only in the back. It’s often connected to tension patterns in the hips, the fascia, the nervous system. By working with the whole body rather than just the symptomatic area, we can address the underlying source rather than just managing the pain. Many clients who’ve been living with back pain for years find significant and lasting relief.
Yes — and this is an area where I’ve seen remarkable results, particularly with craniosacral therapy. Tension headaches are often driven by restriction in the neck, shoulders and the base of the skull. Migraines frequently have a craniosacral component. By releasing those restrictions through gentle, targeted work, we can reduce both the frequency and intensity of headaches over time. This isn’t a one-session fix for everyone, but for many clients it produces changes that medication alone hasn’t been able to achieve.
Absolutely. The jaw, neck and shoulders form a chain — tension in one area almost always affects the others. TMJ dysfunction and chronic jaw clenching respond very well to a combination of craniosacral therapy and myofascial work, addressing not just the jaw itself but the whole pattern of tension it’s connected to. If you grind your teeth, wake up with jaw pain, or carry tension in your face and head, this is worth exploring.
That depends on what you’re bringing in. For acute tension or stress, many people feel significant relief after one or two sessions. For chronic pain that’s been building for years, I usually recommend starting with a series of sessions spaced a week or two apart — so we can work progressively and give the body time to integrate the changes. I’ll always be honest with you about what I think you need and why.
Absolutely. I adapt every session to the person in front of me. Some of the most effective work I do uses very light pressure — craniosacral therapy in particular involves almost no pressure at all. If you’ve had difficult experiences with massage in the past, or if your body is in a sensitive state, that’s important information and I’ll work with it, not against it. You’re always in control of what happens in the session.
